In a single tweet, here’s the problem with strident pro-gun fandom. Replace the phrase”an AR-15 with a hi-capacity magazine” with “a +3 Staff of Lightning” or “my Nimbus 3000 broomstick,” and a belief reveals itself, a belief that the owning of a particular object will auto-magically make you safe. Not the training to effectively use such a thing, but instead just the simple possession of this or that particular weapon.

I grew up in a household with guns. They were not on display, but my father owned them, kept them in a gun safe. From early on, I was taught to respect guns as tools, tools that could be dangerous if mishandled and that should never be treated like a toy. As such, I’ve no problem with the private and considerate ownership of most firearms.

But what I see from the pro-gun lobby is a fetishism for the gun itself that has all of the glitter-eyed adoration of a child on Christmas morning. And the immediate cry of “No no no” at even the slightest mention of a limited playtime, well, that’s familiar as well.

Guns are not toys.

Moreover, guns are not magical items offering mystical shields of astral protection either.
